The Effects of Handwritten Feedback on Paper and Tablet PC in Learning Japanese Writing

Abstract


This paper compares the effect of paper-based handwritten feedback (PBHF) and that of Tablet PC-based handwritten feedback (TBHF) in learning Japanese writing. The study contributes to the research on motivation, usability and presence when learners are given different media-based handwritten error feedback. The results indicated that there was little difference in the effect of the two media on motivation and usability factors. However, PBHF showed a positive effect on presence factor than TBHF. Also, there was little difference in proficiency improvement after the students reviewed different media based handwritten feedback. The results of this study suggest that language teachers should not use ICT with traditional strategies, but in an innovative way to improve their writing instruction and enhance learners? writing proficiency.
